Background

Sub-Saharan Africa

Who we are

African knowledge and experience have contributed a great deal to the evolution of the concept of SSR. DCAF’s Sub-Saharan Africa Division (SSAD) provides medium- to long-term support to local, national and regional stakeholders in sub-Saharan Africa for the development of effective security institutions that are accountable to the state and its citizens.

Our main areas of work include:

  • support to the development and implementation of regional norms
  • strategic and operational advice to governments to ensure well-coordinated and holistic reforms
  • strengthening of internal accountability and control mechanisms in security institutions
  • support to external oversight actors, including parliaments, independent bodies and civil society

Our engagement on the continent has steadily grown year on year in the past decade. To support this growth, we draw on our five-year strategy. Read the 2021-2024 strategy for Sub-Saharan Africa
