Last week DCAF was at the UN Training School in Camp Curragh, Ireland to train students from governments (both civilian and military), international organizations, and civil society. The annual week-long course is hosted by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and the country’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. We run students through a series of case studies and simulations that explore the holistic nature of SSG/R and help prepare them to tackle the many practical challenges of implementing reform and good governance initiatives.
19 Sep 2023This week we paid homage to Dr. Theodor Winkler, a Swiss diplomat, security policy expert, and the founding Director of DCAF. Dr. Winkler’s leadership and vision not only created DCAF, but also fostered the Maison de la Paix where we are headquartered in Geneva. A hub of international expertise, it nurtures innovative solutions to promote peace, human security, and sustainable development. Now retired, Dr. Winkler is still active in the realm of peace and security. His latest book, Living in an Unruly World: The Challenges We Face looks at the transition from a US-led to a multipolar world.
03 Feb 2023This week we kicked off preparations for the 15th annual International Conference of Ombuds Institutions for the Armed Forces to be held in Austria later this year. Gathering in Vienna were representatives of this year’s co-host, the Austrian Parliamentary Commission for the Federal Armed Forces, as well as the German Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, the Parliamentary Ombud’s Committee for the Norwegian Armed Forces. We support ombuds institutions for the armed forces to be effective in their crucial role in preventing and responding to both maladministration and human rights abuses within, and by, the armed forces.
03 Feb 2023With our partners the African Law Foundation and the Association of Licenced Private Security Practitioners of Nigeria we held two workshops with private security companies to strengthen their capacity to protect human rights in the course of day-to-day duties. The workshops in Abuja and Enugu gave practical information and recommendations to help address real-life challenges, and advance private security and human rights in Nigeria in line with international norms and standards.
02 Feb 2023Members of the Zambia Police Service took a three-day training on management of public assemblies and protecting human rights.
The training, done in partnership with the ZPS and the Southern African Centre for Constructive Resolutions of Disputes (SACCORD) emphasized the key importance of police behaviour and effective oversight to ensure the freedom of assembly. This training was supported by Sweden and is part of our project to help strengthen oversight and accountability within the ZPS.
