Preparing to overcome the challenges of SSG/R Last week DCAF was at the UN Training School in Camp Curragh, Ireland to train students from governments (both civilian and military), international organizations, and civil society. The annual week-long course is hosted by the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and the country’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. We run students through a series of case studies and simulations that explore the holistic nature of SSG/R and help prepare them to tackle the many practical challenges of implementing reform and good governance initiatives.  19 Sep 2023

A tribute to DCAF’s founding Director This week we paid homage to Dr. Theodor Winkler, a Swiss diplomat, security policy expert, and the founding Director of DCAF. Dr. Winkler’s leadership and vision not only created DCAF, but also fostered the Maison de la Paix where we are headquartered in Geneva. A hub of international expertise, it nurtures innovative solutions to promote peace, human security, and sustainable development. Now retired, Dr. Winkler is still active in the realm of peace and security. His latest book, Living in an Unruly World: The Challenges We Face looks at the transition from a US-led to a multipolar world. 03 Feb 2023

Gearing up for ICOAF 15 This week we kicked off preparations for the 15th annual International Conference of Ombuds Institutions for the Armed Forces to be held in Austria later this year. Gathering in Vienna were representatives of this year’s co-host, the Austrian Parliamentary Commission for the Federal Armed Forces, as well as the German Parliamentary Commissioner for the Armed Forces, the Parliamentary Ombud’s Committee for the Norwegian Armed Forces. We support ombuds institutions for the armed forces to be effective in their crucial role in preventing and responding to both maladministration and human rights abuses within, and by, the armed forces.   03 Feb 2023
